Overview

The Danfoss FC 302 AutomationDrive is the company's most widely deployed advanced VFD, offering a unified hardware platform that scales from fractional-kW conveyor applications up to multi-megawatt compressors and extruders. Its VVCplus (Voltage Vector Control plus) algorithm delivers high dynamic torque response without encoder feedback, while the optional High-Flux mode enables 160% transient torque for demanding positioning and crane cycles. For applications requiring closed-loop precision, the FC 302 accepts incremental encoders, resolvers, and absolute encoders via optional cards — enabling full flux-vector sensorless or sensored operation.

Fieldbus flexibility is a hallmark of the FC 302. Option B and C slots accommodate PROFIBUS DP, DeviceNet, CANopen, PROFINET IRT, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, Modbus TCP, and BACnet. For building automation and process plants, this means a single drive family fits virtually any DCS or PLC ecosystem without hardware redesign. The LCP (Local Control Panel) provides a full numerical keypad and graphical display, with the ability to copy parameters to a cloning cartridge for rapid commissioning of identical units — a major time-saver in high-volume installations.

The FC 302 carries integrated Safe Torque Off (STO) meeting SIL 2 / PLd cat. 3, with the optional MCO 305 motion controller card adding PLC-like cam profiling and electronic gearing. The result is a drive that competes with full servo systems on many continuous web-handling and winding applications at a fraction of the cost.

Key Features

  • VVCplus Sensorless Torque Control — Danfoss's patented Voltage Vector Control algorithm delivers over 150% starting torque without encoder feedback, achieving ±0.5% speed accuracy on standard induction motors. The drive continuously models motor parameters, compensating for temperature and saturation effects in real time.
  • Adaptive Cascaded PI for Pumps & Fans — Built-in cascade controller coordinates multiple drives for pump/fan stations without a separate PLC. The drive manages lead/lag changeover, sleep/wake, and motor rotation for anti-corrosion cycling — slashing system engineering time on water and HVAC applications.
  • Flexible Safety — STO, SS1, SLS, SDI, SBC — Integrated STO terminals meet SIL 2/PLd without external contactors. With the MCB 150 safety option card, the FC 302 adds SS1 (Safe Stop 1), SLS (Safe Limited Speed), SDI (Safe Direction), and SBC (Safe Brake Control) — all IEC 61800-5-2 compliant and TÜV-certified.
  • Broad Fieldbus & MCO 305 Motion — Option slots accept nearly every industrial fieldbus. The MCO 305 controller card adds on-board cam profiling, electronic gearing, and touch probe capture — enabling winding, printing, and web synchronisation without an external servo controller.
  • Energy Efficiency & Smart Metering — Integrated kWh meter and power factor correction, plus compatibility with Danfoss' VLT® Energy Box software for energy-optimised fan/pump control targeting IE4 efficiency class. Supports eco-mode and sleep detection with programmable wake thresholds.
